I’m calling with Oak Park Call To Action to thank Senator Duckworth for her efforts to help United States Army Veteran Miguel Perez Jr avoid deportation. I hope the Senator will continue to fight to get Mr. Perez retroactive citizenship so he can stay in this country and get the support he deserves after risking his life serving two tours in Afghanistan.

Summary

Miguel Perez Jr, a 39 year old veteran of two tours of duty in Afghanistan is slated to be deported after being convicted of a crime for which he has served seven years in prison. Mr. Perez suffers from PTSD and, possibly, a traumatic brain injury that were a result of his service to our country. This week, Governor Rauner refused a request for clemency. Senator Duckworth has since introduced a “private bill” that might bolster his case, but Senator Durbin has yet to support it.

Mr. Perez is currently confined in a Wisconsin detention center where he began a hunger strike last week. He has no access to veteran benefits that might help him with his injuries sustained while defending our country. Our immigration system is broken. The treatment of Mr. Perez is unconscionable. Please take a minute to voice your support for a humane resolution to this situation.
